MVE returns to Merkin Hall with a new program The Arithmetic of Alternation. The first half of the night will feature premieres by recent winners of MVE’s Young Composers Competition (Alex Burtzos, Griffin Candey, Cheng Jin Koh, and Lisa Neher), as well as works by B.E. Boykin, Randall Eng, and John Glover. The evening will conclude with a performance of Tom Cipullo’s song cycle Secrets, set to poetry by Linda Pastan.

Travel songs by Barber, Berlioz, Blangini, Duparc, Haydn, Poulenc and Hugo Wolf share the ride with commissions by Tom Cipullo and Scott Wheeler, as well as Gilda Lyons' "Great Barrier Reef." The poetry of Baudelaire, Joyce and Metastasio is featured, as well as the correspondence of Paul Bourget, Isabella Stewart Gardner and Edna St. Vincent Millay.
